Our mission
Buying a used vehicle is often a mix of incomplete information, time pressure, and avoidable risk. Our mission is to make that process easier to navigate by publishing plain-language guidance on VIN checks, recalls, liens, inspections, registration-related steps, and other Alberta-specific issues buyers commonly face.
We aim to help readers ask better questions, spot common red flags, and understand what a free VIN check can and cannot tell them.
How we choose topics
We focus on subjects that are useful to Alberta buyers in real purchase situations, especially when the answer is confusing, often misunderstood, or poorly explained elsewhere.
That includes topics such as:
- lien searches and payment risk
- AMVIC dealer licensing and consumer protections
- out-of-province inspections
- registration and paperwork questions
- recall checks and safety context
- odometer, branding, fraud, and private-sale risk
We prioritize topics that are actionable, province-specific, and likely to affect whether a buyer proceeds, negotiates, or walks away.
How we research information
We research our guides using public-facing source material and primary references wherever possible. Depending on the topic, that may include:
- official Alberta process information
- regulator or agency guidance
- manufacturer or transportation-source material
- publicly available recall, VIN, safety, or complaint datasets
- clear documentation related to common buyer processes
Our goal is not to repeat official wording line by line. Instead, we translate complex or fragmented information into a simpler explanation that helps readers understand what step comes next, what the risks are, and what still needs official confirmation. How content is reviewed
We review content before publication for clarity, consistency, and factual alignment with the underlying source material used in the piece.
For key evergreen pages, we also perform periodic reviews after publication. This is especially important for pages that deal with administrative processes, registry-related steps, consumer protections, or other subjects that may change over time.
Editorial review is intended to reduce ambiguity, surface missing caveats, and keep the distinction clear between informational guidance and official or legal advice.
How updates are handled
When a page is meaningfully revised, we update its "Last updated" date. Substantive revisions may include:
- process changes
- source changes
- corrected explanations
- clearer buyer guidance
- expanded caveats or limitations
Minor formatting edits or stylistic cleanups may not always result in a visible date change. Our intent is for the date shown on a page to reflect meaningful editorial maintenance.
Corrections policy
Accuracy matters. If a reader notices a factual error, outdated instruction, broken reference, or unclear statement, they are encouraged to contact us.
When we receive a credible correction request, we review the page against the relevant source material and update it where appropriate. If a correction is needed, we aim to make it clearly and promptly.
Useful correction requests usually include:
- the URL of the page
- the wording in question
- a short explanation of the issue
- a supporting source, if available
